Getting Started

Research is an integral skill in undergrad, medical school, and beyond. During this four-week research project, you'll have the opportunity to take a deep dive into a facet of medicine that fascinates you. This project is not only fun, it's also great experience to practice the research process.

To get started with your research project, you'll follow the 3 steps below:

Step 1: Choose a specialization

You'll choose a medical specialization you are interested in. The specializations in medicine are extensive, but here is a general list to get you started:

  • Allergy and immunology
  • Anesthesiology
  • Dermatology
  • Diagnostic radiology
  • Emergency medicine
  • Family medicine
  • Internal medicine
  • Medical genetics
  • Neurology
  • Nuclear medicine
  • Obstetrics and gynecology
  • Ophthalmology
  • Pathology
  • Pediatrics
  • Physical medicine and rehabilitation
  • Preventive medicine
  • Psychiatry
  • Radiation oncology
  • Surgery

Step 2: Choose a topic within the specialization

Within your specialization, choose a topic to focus on and research. Possible topic ideas include:

  • Cutting edge technology/practices in the specialization
  • Abnormal/interesting cases within the specialization
  • Public policy in the specialization
  • Recent and exciting research in the specialization
  • The future/evolution of the specialization

Step 3: Craft a research question

Once you have settled on a specialization and topic, craft an open-ended research question that you find exciting.

Examples:

  • How has the incorporation of Artificial Intelligence in Radiology affected patients and professionals?
  • How has cardiology research demonstrated male bias?
  • What are the psychiatric and psychological impacts of diabetes?
